2023 Irina Star Legacy Award

Dr. Penny E. Borenstein

Presented to an individual who has dedicated their time, talent, and professionalism to serving the needs of our local Jewish community.

Irina Starodubzew was a critical component of the Jewish Film Festival. She was the ultimate woman behind the scenes. Her contributions to the Jewish community, and her commitment to sharing Jewish culture were at the core of her life’s work.

Fate or circumstance, whatever you want to call it, challenges each of us at some point in our life. Often, we have no idea how we will respond to that test until it happens. It is our response that is the thing that shows us what we’re made of, the cut of our jib so to speak... our true character. If we face the test well, it may be the very thing that defines us for the rest of our lives.

For the San Luis Obispo community, it is Dr. Penny E. Borenstein who proved her mettle during the COVID pandemic. As SLO County Public Health Officer, she not only rose to the challenge but handled it with professionalism, tireless dedication and a kind, calm demeanor.

Where did this outstanding citizen come from? Dr. Borenstein is a Public Health & General Preventive Medicine Specialist with more than over 35 years of experience in the medical field. She graduated from the State University of New York/ Health Science Center at Syracuse in Family Medicine and did her residency in Pediatrics. It is that background, one aimed on concern for the individual that was always foremost in her mind. Challenged continuously in emotionally charged circumstances, she remained steadfast, always focused on achieving the best possible health outcomes.

Dr. Borenstein has been awarded the Central Coast Medical Association 2020 Physician of the Year and the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Award. Inboth cases, the award was for a physician who has gone above and beyond meeting the challenges of the current pandemic. Dr. Borenstein was the obvious honoree.

The Irina Star Legacy Award is an award that highlights the best of humanity, gift of sacrifice and reminds us all to be the best person we can be. This award is a source of pride for our Jewish Community by recognizing a remarkable member of our own.
